Deck Renovation - Wahroonga, North Shore

Quick Summary

  • A Wahroonga client approached Dependabuild to create a large entertainment deck with v-groove cathedral ceiling and a central staircase that doubled as seating for an outdoor projector cinema.

  • The brief also included two large stacking slider doors, two new aluminium windows to bring natural light into the living and kitchen space, and re-cladding across the back and two sides of the home.

  • Careful laser levelling was used to match the deck height to the interior floor, giving a seamless step-free transition between inside and outside.

  • A subfloor of bearers, joists and posts was built before laying 140mm spotted gum hardwood decking, with the stacking sliders installed smoothly despite their size.

  • The stair-and-seating structure involved intricate framing and became the statement piece of the project, a great example of working closely with a client to execute a clear vision.

  • Best for: anyone considering an entertainer's deck or big outdoor project and wanting to see what's possible with the right planning and craftsmanship.

When David approached Dependabuild to take on his deck. He was looking to create an entertainment area on a grand scale. David wanted a large deck with v groove lining boards to a cathedral ceiling with a set of stairs running down the middle as a seating area for viewing projector-screened movies.

Dependabuild installed two large stacking slider doors to bring the inside out as well as two new aluminium windows to bring in more natural light through the living and kitchen space and re-cladding around the entire back and two sides of the home.

The Process

David had a very clear vision for this build, therefore several onsite meetings were organised and taken out to ensure there was always a sound understanding of the end product desired.

One requirement was that there was no step-down from the inside floor to the deck. This was achieved by setting up a laser and setting new joist height taking into consideration the decking thickness and height of the sliding door threshold.

Once the height was set, it was time to start with the subfloor structure. Bearers, joists, and posts were installed, followed by the laying of new 140 spotted gum hardwood decking.

Next was the stacking slider which presented a small challenge due to its sheer size. The installation ran smoothly, and no unexpected challenges were faced.

The construction of the seating and stair set was large in size and scale and included a large, intricate amount of framing. Careful thought was put into this process, and it became a strong statement piece in the body of work.

Dependabuild enjoyed working closely with David to achieve his ideal outdoor entertainment space.
