KITCHEN RENOVATIONS

A kitchen renovation can be a lifelong dream for many people who have patiently tolerated older Northern Beaches and North Shore-style kitchens, usually featuring tiny or musky old cupboards, wonky door handles, cracked stovetops and tired ovens.

Quite often, it’s the kitchen renovation that will cost the most and is therefore pushed to the back of your to-do list, yet a kitchen renovation could absolutely transform your Northern Beaches or North Shore home.

Today’s kitchens are not just a place to cook, it is also the social hub for family and friends to gather. With television shows teaching us how to cook and entertain guests in restaurant style, your kitchen not only provides the tools to pull off a dinner party of grand proportions but also provides a place for casual get-togethers and family meals.

Kitchen Layout and Design

A useful kitchen needs to have a great layout. The design of your layout will determine the amount of cupboard and preparation space you will need and will help utilise the area to its best potential. If your kitchen is small, consider enlarging the area by removing walls or unused spaces.

A builder with an engineer will be able to determine if walls can be removed or if there’s a need for a supporting beam to be established. If you are renovating a large area, you may want to redesign the entire floor plan. Chat with your builder and discuss your thoughts and ideas; they may find a solution that works for you.

There are generally a few different layout designs you may have for your kitchen:

  • Gallery-style kitchens are very popular today. They are large open kitchens with plenty of lower and upper storage space.

  • Island kitchens and Peninsula style kitchens - These offer a larger workspace that can also be converted into an area for entertaining.

  • U-shaped kitchens - More traditional with space on either side.

  • One-wall kitchen - These work well in small spaces.

Kitchen Style

What look do you hope to achieve with your renovation? Minimalist and Contemporary designs look amazing and let you think creatively by adding hidden nooks and storage spaces for regularly used items. If you have a more Rustic look in mind, there are many different ways to incorporate this and allow your personality to define the design you desire.

Look through magazines, online or in showrooms to see the huge range of available ideas. Mix and match pieces you want to incorporate into your new kitchen, adding or eliminating them throughout the process to help refine it.

Choosing colours is also a huge part of finding your style. Popular colours have recently been natural shades of stone, moss green, and sage, bringing the open look of the outside indoors. If you are feeling bold, quirky splashes of orange, red, and pink have seemed to rise in popularity, as has the tradition of black and white or grey kitchens. Natural materials such as wood, copper, and brass look great with navy.

Kitchen Appliances

The objective of a kitchen has always been a place within the house to prepare and cook meals. Over time we have used it for broader purposes, such as a neutral place in the home to conduct conversations, play games, do homework or even to get your paperwork done. But what the kitchen adds to all of these things is the ability to accomplish all of these tasks while also nourishing ourselves, or our family. The available appliances allow you to accomplish two things at once to make life that little bit easier. Take a look around, ovens and dishwashers have delayed starts so you can set and forget, fridges can have touch displays and inbuilt screens, add a wine fridge, or instant hot water. The colours of these items can be endless so if you are feeling bold, think about that orange fridge!

Kitchen Storage

A great kitchen has a lot of storage, both large and small. Add clever nooks so you don’t lose those egg cups and shot glasses, cavities to store plates, serving trays or chopping boards. Soft closing drawers are popular today and instead of a lot of cupboards, try to utilise every space to make the kitchen that works for you.

Butlers Pantries have been reinvented for a while now and are great for hiding all those everyday essentials. Ensure the sink space in your pantry is large to hide all those dirty dishes; maybe add a dishwasher in there as well.

Visit a showroom to see the many variations of door styles. Some different styles include shaker-style doors, glass with frames, modern panel doors or even straight melamine. By adding handles to suit your styling you can give your storage space a touch of elegance.

Kitchen Flooring

Kitchen flooring needs to be easy to clean, water-resistant, hardwearing and of course look good. Hybrid flooring comes in a range of colours and styles and is a fantastic product. They are scratch-proof, waterproof, and environmentally friendly due to their reusable compounds.

Solid timber looks stylish but before you decide on this style it is probably advisable to be prepared for the price, as it requires foresting and may be difficult to get even colouring. It also takes a lot longer to install and can be very dusty on installation. Solid timber is strong but may also require sanding over the years to keep its prestige.

Engineered timber is less likely to expand in varying temperatures, as it is made up of components of different wood types. It also doesn’t require sanding as that can damage the surface.

Tiles look great, and many people are opting for larger-style, natural-looking tiles with a matte surface. Tiles can become slippery when wet, but with the matte surface, they are less inclined to take you ice skating from the fridge to the sink. Teamed with a stone or granite benchtop, tiles can give your kitchen a smoother, sleeker look.

Kitchen Lighting

Try to create natural lighting where possible. Adding large glass doors and aluminium framed windows throughout the home enables the beauty of the outside to be drawn into your indoor space, creating the look of not only great lighting but open space and relaxation as well.
