A sophisticated, fresh bathroom always creates an impression and is a great inclusion into any home renovation. Having the right ambience, lighting, style and design are often the features that many people are looking at changing to ensure their new bathroom fits their lifestyle.
Houses with multiple bathrooms allow you to design the layout to utilise the individual's needs. This could mean dual basins, larger showers or corner baths…the ideas are endless. Today’s ensuites are also a great way to provide an extra bathroom space for a growing family but are often small, limiting movement within the ensuite.
At times a bathroom reconstruction will require water to be turned off and limited access to the renovation area, which may be inconvenient to the family and it’s something you want to be don’t as quickly as possible. Reducing any additional complications may help to lessen the time period and enable the renovation to run smoothly so we’ve put together 3 easy mistakes you can avoid when doing a bathroom renovation.
The Mistakes
1: Choose your bathroom fixtures and tiles before the plumber does his rough-ins. Rough-ins are the installation of plumbing and electrical services in wall cavities before the walls are lined with billboards. This enables the plumber to place pipes in the appropriate positions.
Your builder requires details of the fixture and fittings to ensure the trades are communicated with complete knowledge of the items you have purchased to install. The bathroom fixtures do not need to be on-site at this point, but information on the dimensions and installation requirements will certainly prove less costly when utilising the trades time and professionalism.
2: Provide the builder with the type and size of the tiles you intend to have laid on your floors and walls. Once again you are not required to have the tiles on-site at this point of the build but accurate information or a few sample tiles can eliminate any problems before tiling. This is often overlooked but can help your builder to ensure areas that are required to hang towel rails, electrical plugs and niches are positioned well during the ‘rough-in’ stage. You also may need a specialist tiler to professionally lay any intricate details and patterns that you may desire. A builder can ensure that all existing wall studs are straight and corners are at a 90-degree angle. It is surprising how many older builds are uneven, and this can cause problems with your tiling, where these faults can become obvious. Your builder can coordinate this when promptly notified.
3: For a bathroom to function appropriately, airflow and natural light are important. Consider the size of your windows or add a skylight or light tunnel & airflow can be maximised by using an exhaust fan or adding vents. Consider Louvre windows that are easily opened and also offer privacy.
